Vitamin Deficiencies After Surgery

Bariatric surgery can be an important leg on your journey to better health. I am often inspired by my patients’ stories and the hard work they put in to improve their lifestyles and health outlook. But the surgery is not without side-effects.

Several studies have shown that bariatric surgical procedures ensure weight loss and improvement in metabolic parameters in morbidly obese individuals[8-10]. However, these individuals need to be evaluated for long-term complications of the surgery[11]. One of the most common complications after bariatric surgery is vitamin deficiencies. Vitamin deficiencies have been observed in patients who underwent malabsorptive surgery due to absorption disorder and in patients who underwent restrictive surgery due to inadequate intake[12].

Studies of bariatric surgery outcomes have shown that patients are at risk for deficiencies of many important vitamins, including vitamins A, D, K and B-12 as well as thamine and folic acid. I’m so excited to be able to support my patients on their journeys by developing a multivitamin that can help them address this risk while boosting their metabolism and enhancing their energy.
